From Rezaul H Laskar Islamabad, Jan 5 (PTI) The ruling Pakistan People's Party today decided not to approach Swiss authorities to reopen cases of alleged money laundering against President Asif Ali Zardari despite a directive from the Supreme Court seeking action on the issue by January 10. The decision was made at a meeting of the PPP's top leadership jointly chaired by President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani at the presidency, sources said. The PPP leadership contended that the President enjoyed immunity from prosecution under the Constitution, the sources told PTI. The PPP's leadership was also of the opinion that the government had taken necessary steps to implement the apex court's order striking down the National Reconciliation Ordinance, a controversial graft amnesty issued in 2007 by former President Pervez Musharraf. The cases against Zardari in Switzerland were closed under the NRO, which benefited over 8,000 people, including politicians and bureaucrats. Since it annulled the amnesty in 2009, the apex court has been pressuring the government to reopen the cases against Zardari. On January 3, the Supreme Court set a seven-day deadline for the government to fully implement its order striking down the NRO, including the reopening of cases against Zardari. A statement issued by presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar made no reference to the decisions made by the PPP's leadership on the apex courts directive and the cases against Zardari. The statement said the meeting had decided to hold by-elections to all vacant seats in the national and provincial assemblies and to complete all legal formalities for this purpose at the earliest.
