PFUJ announces rallies to mourn killing of Shahzad

KARACHI: The Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has announced a countrywide demonstration and rallies on June 3 to protest the brutal killing of journalist Saleem Shahzad, who worked for an Italian news agency and was the bureau chief of a Hong Kong-registered media website. He had talked of threats – allegedly from some quarters on a number of occasions. The PFUJ will also observe 2 days of mourning over the killing of Shahzad. The PFUJ directed all its affiliated union of journalists to observe two days of mourning over the brutal killing of the journalist, host black flags, and hold condolence meetings with the coordination of human rights activists, the civil society, lawyers and political party’s activists. The 40-year-old reporter for Asia Times Online and the Adnkronos International news agency was last seen when he left home on May 29 to take part in a television talk show but never arrived. Instead, Shahzad’s body was found near his abandoned car outside Islamabad. Police said the dead body bore signs of torture. The PFUJ condemned the murder and termed it a great loss for the deceased’s family and the journalist community. The union said that the deceased was one of the most active and professional journalist in the country. pr
