US asked to respect ‘red lines’

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani asked the United States on Friday to respect Pakistan’s red lines, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Talking to US Ambassador Cameron Munter, who called on him at the Prime Minister’s House, Mr Gilani said the United States must guarantee there would be no breach of Pakistan’s frontiers in future. He said it was his primary responsibility to safeguard the country’s dignity and honour, adding that respect for sovereignty and avoidance of unilateral action were the bare minimum that Pakistan expected.
The prime minister stressed the need for close cooperation between Pakistan and the US for fighting terrorism, — terming the scourge a common enemy.
He said the democratic government had raised awareness about the terror war, claiming that now the nation was ready to accept the war as its own.
“No war can be fought without support of the people.”
Mr Gilani reiterated that an independent, prosperous and stable Afghanistan was in Pakistan’s interests. Pakistan would support the Afghan-led and Afghan-owned reconciliation process, the prime minister added.
The US Ambassador said the two countries needed to fight the menace of terror with single-mindedness and a total
commitment.
Convergence of interests between the US and Pakistan against terrorism provided a realistic basis and common ground to continue to collaborate and save the world from the curse of extremism and terrorism, Cameron Munter observed.—APP
